The Enugu State Government has recruited more than 160 veterinary and paraveterinary doctors, laboratory scientists and other professionals to strengthen livestock production and veterinary services across the state.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Patrick Nwabueze, said the recruitment was part of Governor Peter Mbah’s plan to revive the agricultural sector and address the shortage of skilled personnel in livestock production.
He said the government plans to revive all 17 veterinary clinics across the state and introduce technology and innovation to improve livestock productivity.
The state Project Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, Dr Ifeyinwa Nnajieze, said three of the newly recruited workers would be posted to each of the state’s 17 local government areas to provide livestock services.
She said the government was working to transform livestock production from subsistence farming into a commercialised sector and urged the new employees to maintain discipline and professionalism.
